You should explain the difference between a backfire, a crownfire, and a headfire, and when is each of these effective as a management tool? 2. You are the newly appointed fire ecologist of a reserve. Explain how you would do the following. 1. Tell if over the years fire has been used correctly or wrongly as a management tool in this particular reserve. 2. What would you require to draw up a new fire management plan for the reserve? 3. Lastly, in your new plan, would you consider patch mosaic burning as a strategy? 4. Justify your answer. 5. The key concept is the ecological use of fire in ecosystems. 6. 2. It's the types of fire and their uses. 7. The duration should be submitted in one week, one to two weeks. As an introduction, fire influences the development of vegetation communities and ecosystems. Several ecosystems are fire dependent and the use of fire has a bearing on water resources. Soil conservation misuse of fire can have lasting effects such as soil erosion and impact on plant population dynamics. Therefore, the time of burning and the type of fire are critical to the management of this ecosystem. The sub theme is designing a reserve burning policy. 2. Burning to achieve management objectives. 3. Evaluating management objectives. Conclusion. The use of fire can be used to achieve both long-term and short-term objectives of a conservation area. It is also influenced by several factors such as rainfall, vegetation type, and animal species kept in the area. Therefore, you are expected to know enough to take appropriate management decisions or to assist management in taking correct decisions with regards to the use of fire. Your learning activities. 1. As an ecologist to a newly established reserve, draw up a plan for the upcoming fire season. In your plan, you must include all the equipment, manpower, and other resources such as stakeholders you will require to make this a success. The plan must be in chronological order, that is, what will you do first and then proceed like that up to the last one. And then for this task, you are expected to work in groups of not more than five. In a role play, assign positions to each group member and the tasks that each one must perform to make the plan and preparation a success. You will be expected to justify your approach. 2. You have been appointed as a new fire ecologist of a reserve and the reserve manager has asked you to review the fire policy and make sure that it is still aligned with reserve objectives. In your answer state, how planning should proceed going forward and which objectives is this aligned to. Taking into consideration the types of game species kept in the reserve and the different plant communities and ecosystems of the reserve. This is not a group task and therefore you are expected to do this alone and share your answers only at the end of the week. 3. The reserve you are based in has a problem of bush encroachment and soil erosion in certain areas. Therefore, outline how you will go about rectifying this using fire as a management tool. 4. Your reserve keeps rare and endangered species such as Oribi and Sable Antelope combined with a breeding population of Cranes. Explain how you will implement a banning regime that will benefit these and other species. This is not a group task. Submit your assignments once you have completed the task. Thank you and if you have any questions, kindly ask where you are not clear.
