The poem describes a woman with a love for the ocean and a longing for her landlocked lover. She dreams of a magical gown that would allow her to be with him. With the help of Mistress Luna, she is transformed into a beautiful creature and dances with her lover. However, when he sees her fishtail at dawn, he is shocked and she disappears into the ocean, promising to return each twilight. Wild ocean waves, Wedding within tumbling tresses, Which dance on the briny breezes caresses. She sits atop the rugged rocks, And seductively sings, Her dewy ivory skin, Downy soft as the swan's wings. She dreams of her landlocked love, With sea-blue eyes, And the sky echoes with her love-lorn sighs. Mistress Luna, her confidante, Listens with compassion, For she longs for a magical gown to be fashioned, With hues of the ocean shimmering like the brightest star, One which would take her into his world so afar, Dancing in his arms, Like a butterfly floating on air, A mere dream of a fishtail, Tears full of despair. Then Luna casts her benevolent smile, Upon this beauty rare, With silver threads from moonbeams, Clutches up her raiment fair, All starlight it swirls, And waltzes with her in the saltiest grey, Then adorns her fair countenance, As the tale fades away. As mellifluous music serenely streams from the land, She spies the object of her desire, Holding out his hand. Her heart leaps with joy as they dance through the night, But as dawn kisses the waiting sky, Her happiness takes flight. She woefully watches as her beloved's face begins to pale, At the sudden sight of her luminous, scaly tail. Then, in a flourish, she melted away into the foam, To hear the fond kiss of farewell, Saying, No more shall I roam, I shall return, my love, To you each day when twilight falls, Evermore shall you hear The sound of my captivating cause.
