ESSA can enhance teachers' knowledge and skills by aligning professional development with existing knowledge on literacy, teaching, and professional development. Seasoned teachers, with three or more years of experience, possess a wealth of ideas and strategies. Consulting with them can provide insights into their understanding of phonological awareness and how to enhance its implementation. Phonological awareness activities need not be lengthy; even a few minutes daily can have long-term benefits for students. ESSA has an opportunity to support teachers' expertise by connecting professional development to what we already know about both literacy, teaching, and professional development. Dennis, page 394. Seasoned teachers are teachers that have been working in the field for three or more years, have a larger toolbox of ideas and tricks. It's important to consult with these teachers to help determine what they already know about phonological awareness and how to help improve implementation. Implementation of phonological awareness activities do not have to be long. Some activities can just be a few minutes long, but implementing these activities daily will benefit students over time.
