A preceptee is a student who is paired with an experienced nurse preceptor for a one-on-one learning experience during a clinical preceptorship. Preceptees are adult learners who come from various backgrounds. Some students may be new to the country, some may have families, or some may be newly graduated from high school. Despite their various backgrounds, preceptees have many responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include utilizing the theory learned in the classroom and applying it to the clinical practice with their best ability. Next, when caring for their patients, the preceptee uses their clinical judgment, seeks out opportunities to improve their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, engages in teamwork, and builds confidence in their nursing practice. Finally, the preceptee is constantly working on defining their own nursing identity. A nursing identity is not innate and it is the various learning experiences that occur in the clinical setting that helps to shape and influence it.
