Joe and DJ Jesse provide some Christmas cheer on the eve of the big day!
Joe and DJ Jeffy invite listeners to join them for the Empower Hour, a radio show celebrating the disability community. They share powerful stories, expert insights, practical tips, and play music. They announce that the Christmas Eve special is pre-recorded and they wish everyone Merry Christmas. They play Christmas songs and discuss different Christmas traditions around the world, including ordering KFC for Christmas dinner in Japan and the tradition of the 13 Yule Lads in Iceland. They also talk about their own Christmas traditions and mention the cold weather in Dublin, Ireland. They end by discussing The Wiggles and playing another song. Hey everyone, I'm Joe, and I'm DJ Jeffy, co-host for the unit, Perspective Online. Join us for the Empower Hour, where we celebrate the disability community every week. We'll share powerful stories, expert insights and practical tips, all the while serving up some delectable tunes. Don't miss out. Tune in, empower yourself and be a part of our vibrant community. Catch the Empower Hour every Tuesday at 9am on CanSatM 89.1. See you there. That's right, CSK right now, live on CanSatM 89.1 for Christmas Eve Special. But I'm telling a little flip there, we are not live. This is a pre-recorded episode. Jessie is away and I'm enjoying my Christmas Eve. We are on the airwaves bringing you a Christmas special of the Empower Hour. Say g'day Jess. G'day everyone. Are we going to wish them a Merry Christmas? Season's greetings from us at the Empower Hour. Lovely. Yeah, that's right, it is Christmas Eve. I'm not sure what the weather really is, but I'd imagine it's inevitably very hot out there. That's what far north Queensland Christmases are like. We've got a selection of Christmas tunes for you today from across the globe. DJ Jessie has put together a fantastic playlist here of some real Christmas bangers. And I'm sure there's going to be some odd ones in there as well that you haven't heard for a long time. Are you looking forward to the show, Jess? Yes. Yeah, me too, man. Okay, shall we crack on with the music? What's the first song we've got for them, the first Christmas song? I think it's my favourite Christmas song. Alright, everyone. We're kicking off the festive vibes with an old-time Christmas classic. Here's Wham! Yes! Yep Really? Mm-hmm Wow Because I've got George Michael in my name Yeah, you know everything about George Michael, right? Yes Yep, okay Have you been out to America? Um, no I haven't been to America Okay, one day you're going to go to America and something's going to happen Yeah Just so you know, be ready for that Okay, let's get on to some Christmas stuff Christmas, it's Christmas tomorrow in fact But in some places around the world Christmas is celebrated today, on Christmas Eve That's right, isn't it Jess? Yep So Christmas is celebrated around the world and what's fascinating is how unique some of the traditions are So in Japan, Christmas isn't traditionally a big holiday but thanks to a very successful KFC marketing campaign in the 1970s it's now common for families to order a bucket of fried chicken for Christmas dinner How mad is that? Talk about festive fast food My former housemate, Judy told me that Judy-san, how mad's that Jess? KFC on Christmas? The slogan for KFC is Finger lickin' good That's right, when you eat you like to finger lick, don't you? Yes Okay, so other Christmas traditions There's another slogan Yeah, what's that? You can't beat that taste You can't beat that taste The Japanese share the same sentiment apparently on Christmas Day Yeah So other Christmas traditions Meanwhile in Iceland there's a charming tradition involving the 13 Yule Lads mischievous but kind kind-hearted figures who visit children for 13 nights leading up to Christmas Kids leave their shoes by the window and the Yule Lads leave small treats they're more like elves for those who've been good or a potato for those who've been naughty That sounds similar to our our cold, doesn't it Jess? You get cold if you're a bad boy, don't you? Not really You've been a good boy this year, have you? Yes You sure you haven't been a bad boy? Cold Not really No, no, no Yeah, so if you Jess, if you had a choice, would you rather if you had a Christmas Christmas tradition in your family? Anything that you do as a tradition on Christmas Day? Yeah What's the tradition that you do? Watch Christmas movies Wonderful Any other traditions? In my family it was a tradition that we would open where we'd beg our parents to open one present on Christmas Eve and then sometimes they would say yes and sometimes they would say no They started out quite lenient but as the years moved on quite strong-handed with it I don't mean like that, but What are your parents doing for Christmas? What are they doing for Christmas? I don't know I think typically my eldest sister would host the whole family for Christmas and she'd spend hours upon hours slaving away to make the most delicious food that we as a family collectively would devour in about 10-15 minutes but I think she's sick to death of that now She said no more No more! Not doing it! No! That's what she said In Ireland they celebrate Christmas Yes they do, that's right Morgan Crowley's from Ireland Okay He's from Dublin Brilliant Well in Dublin it's a lot colder than it is in Australia It's much colder They may even have snow on Christmas and they have that have Jack Frost sniffing their nose all the time so they stay indoors pretty much and there's a hot fire going on in the house and they do stuff like baking marshmallows over the fire Wow Wow, you're very knowledgeable on Irish Christmas traditions, mate Yeah, I've been been looking at the album of The Wiggles called You'll Be Wiggling What a segue into The Wiggles there that was amazing Yeah Shall we play another song? Another song Another Christmas song What have we got coming up, Nick? Now it's time for something uniquely Aussie Hey Here's Colin Buchanan I actually saw him on Playful Yep and Greg Champion with Come on It's an Aussie Christmas a tune that will have you cracking cracking that smile under the summer sun Okay, let's play it Woo Woo Come on It's an Aussie Christmas from boy up front to streaky face Come on It's an Aussie Christmas from on Aussie Christmas Day Come on It's an Aussie Christmas grab a remedy call your mate and ask yourself a little Aussie Christmas Day You'll need some runny candles a hand from Bob Lee's Deli Co get a bag of pre-cut coleslaw hit the drive-thru bottle low toss the tank of barbie gas up amongst a bag of salted chips get a box of daggy bonbons a good French onion dish Come on It's an Aussie Christmas from boy up front to streaky face Come on It's an Aussie Christmas from on Aussie Christmas Day Come on It's an Aussie Christmas grab a remedy call your mate and ask yourself a little Aussie Christmas Day Dream alone and do the edges get the doggy an extra bowl whack a top between the gum trees speakers on the patio bags of ice from Joe's Garage get a jib around the yard grab the neighbours cranks a hi-fi the knuckles down and party hard Come on It's an Aussie Christmas from boy up front to streaky face Come on It's an Aussie Christmas from on Aussie Christmas Day Come on It's an Aussie Christmas grab a remedy call your mate and ask yourself a little Aussie Christmas Day You got to ask yourself a little Aussie Christmas Day Celebration across the nation Aussie Christmas Day Get empowered with Joe and DJ Jesse The Empower Hour on KazFM 89.1 The Child is a King The Carol of Sons The oldest batch There's a new beginning Dreams of Santa Dreams of snow Fingers numb Faces aglow with Christmas time Mistletoe and wine Children singing Christmas carols With love on the fire Gifts on the tree A time to rejoice In the good that we see A time for living A time for believing A time for trusting A time to sing Joy and laughter Joy and laughter A time for taking A time for loving Christmas time Mistletoe and wine Children singing Christmas carols With love on the fire Gifts on the tree A time to rejoice In the good that we see A time for living A time for trusting A time for believing A time for trusting A time for loving A time for trusting A time for loving A time for trusting A time for loving A time for trusting It's a time for giving A time for getting A time for forgiving And for forgetting Christmas is love Christmas is peace A time for hating And fighting to be Christmas time Mistletoe and wine Children singing Christmas carols With love on the fire Gifts on the tree A time to rejoice In the good that we see Christmas time Mistletoe and wine Children singing Christmas carols With love on the fire Gifts on the tree A time to rejoice In the good that we see Christmas time Mistletoe and wine Children singing Christmas carols With love on the fire Gifts on the tree A time to rejoice In the good that we see Silent night Holy night Holy night With love on the fire And gifts on the tree A time to rejoice In the good that we see That was Cliff Richards' Heartwarming Mistletoe and Wine A timeless song That captures the magic of Christmas Beautifully It does, doesn't it? Yeah I got that song on my Karaoke Christmas DVD Ah, Karaoke Christmas DVD Yeah Cool as Amongst my other Karaoke DVDs Do you like Christmas carols? Do you, Jessie? Yes Well, interestingly enough, you know Music and Christmas go Hand in hand And it's hard to imagine the season Without Christmas carols And did you know that the Carols date back to the Middle Ages? They weren't even about Christmas at first They were songs Celebrating the changing seasons And over the years The focus was shifted to Christmas And by the Victorian era Carols became a cornerstone Of holiday celebrations Modern carols like Silent Night Written in 1818 And O Holy Night Have become iconic But we've also seen a wave of Contemporary holiday hits Like Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You Which we just played That song Did you know Has earned her In royalties Over 60 million dollars So if there's any Aspiring musicians Or producers out there Who Are a bit strapped for cash I know a couple Are a bit strapped for cash Create a Christmas song That's the way to do it Money right there forever You know that Jess? Yeah Yeah DJ Jesse What's your all time Favourite Christmas carol? What's your all time Favourite Christmas carol? Do you know? I don't know What's your favourite? Any ideas? Silent Night? I love Christmas dinner Like I was saying earlier, my sister used to knock up an amazing Christmas dinner It's very diverse, Christmas time, across the world Here in Australia, many families enjoy a summer feast Whether it be a barbecue, fresh prawns, mangoes, pavlova All the while in the northern hemisphere, it's all about warm and hearty dishes Like a roast turkey or a mince pie Mind you, saying that, one time in the UK, we did have to have a barbecue for Christmas Because at about, I think it was 9am in the morning Dad's got the turkey in the oven Actually, it was one of those hideous bird within a bird within a bird concoctions Can't remember, there is an affectionate name for it 10am in the morning, it's in the oven, and the power goes And it's been maybe 4 or 5 hours before, you know, even longer before the power came back on So my dad made a snap decision So he was out in the garden And you've got to remember, it's dark by 2 o'clock in England for Christmas Day Or very close, it's getting dark So he's in the garden Doing a barbecue on Christmas Day Because we had no power And actually, despite not having any power And thinking it could be the worst Christmas ever It turned into one of the most memorable Christmases I've ever had So it's funny how things, you know, what appears to be a tragedy at the start Can turn into an amazing event So yeah, well done dad for that one Really turned it around, superstar Christmas We've got a couple more songs before we go One of them, unbelievably, from Chris Brown Chris Brown's making Christmas songs DJ Jesse, introduce this song for us bro Up next is Chris Brown with his soulful take on this Christmas Let the warm vocals and the festive vibe take you away Hang all the mistletoe I'm gonna get to know you better This Christmas, and as we trim the tree How much fun it's gonna be together This Christmas, the fireside is blazing bright We're caroling through the night This Christmas will be a very special Christmas for me Woo!
