Pop culture has a big impact on the workplace. Older generations struggle to adapt to the constant changes. It's important to bring cultural experiences into the workplace. Lack of mainstream media contributes to the generation gap. Cancel culture and lack of patience affect the workplace. Technology has made us expect instant gratification. Bosses are trying to leave culture at the door, but it leads to worse job security and satisfaction. We need to have patience and respect each other's differences. Pop culture plays a big role in the workplace and we need to find a balance. Hello and good morning and welcome back to the show, Learn It with Tommy. I'm your host, Tommy Guys, and today we'll be learning about pop culture and how it affects the workplace. First we must look at what pop culture really is before we can dive into how it affects the workplace. Pop culture is defined as the culture of our life, of our time right now. It's not just popular politics or celebrities or who's dating who, but it's really about how the people of our time are living and spending their time doing their life. Something that also really incorporates pop culture is working, because as most people work, their culture will affect how they work. First we will discuss about how pop culture kind of gets a weird reputation because of the constant changing of our culture and stuff like that. We have a lot of separation between the older generations and our generations as they don't feel the same as us. It's harder for older people to adapt to our generation because our culture is constantly changing and the way they've done things often times stays the same. A lot of this separation comes from the idea that the younger generations should stay away from bringing their culture into the workplace. A study done by Travis Jones, he's a consultant at the Winters Group, L.C., says that it's really small-minded to expect that employees do not bring the wealth of cultural experiences into their work experience and identity. Just saying, culture is such an important aspect of our lives, it's small-minded and stupid to believe that we can't bring it into our workplace. Next we will discuss about how older generations have a difficult time adapting to pop culture is mainly because of lack of mainstream media. We see a lot of people don't know what is culturally acceptable or what is going on in the current time because older generations are not given opportunities to see what we are doing. Another main reason for pop culture's great effect on the workplace is cancel culture. A lot of cancel culture comes from a lack of patience. Cancel culture in our society right now is the canceling or calling out of misbehavior from people of power or anyone in general and the lack of patience to let them learn from their mistakes and we would rather just get rid of them and have someone new step into their position of power. One thing that really stands out to me is the idea of cancel culture being a part of patience when patience is a lost virtue. Patience in our day has almost gone extinct. This is mainly because of technology that we are given. Now you can look up on your phone and get the answer to almost any question you have in a matter of seconds. So when someone isn't able to adapt to the way of your life and it's not instant gratification we are shown or felt that it is undeserving or unwarranted. A study shown by Chris Matz, an award winning creative director says creating an expectation of instant delivery creates an increased inner pressure for instant gratification. We receive emails or other electronic messages and we feel compelled to reply instantly and if someone for whatever reason doesn't reply instantly or we are not given our information instantly we begin to twitch. We are physically unable to have patience on receiving an answer. What must we think that we can do to have patience when it comes to adapting and accepting culture? Generally we look to discuss how culture affects the workplace within workplace environments. A lot of bosses and higher up exec people in workplaces are starting to bring to the idea which we talked about before from Mr. Travis that it's small minded to believe this but they are trying to leave the culture at the door. They are saying we must look at how culture within workplace if we encourage them to leave the culture at the door it maybe will have a better workplace environment. But from what we find from Derek Wingman who conducted an experiment on the difference between authoritative and learning culture and how it affected job security and satisfaction we find that leaving the culture at the door and the authority of no more culture can only lead to a worse job security and satisfaction than the learning culture of having patience and figuring out how to deal with each other's differences in a respectful peaceful manner. So I hope I've done a good job today. My job today here is to show hopefully anyone that's willing to listen but just how pop culture can really affect the workplace and workplace environments and how it can be our duty to new people coming into the workplace to have patience to not be irrational or unreasonable when it comes to our culture but to be confident and to be the people that we want to be in our jobs and to find that happy medium. Thank you for listening and I hope you guys all have a wonderful day.
