When coaching someone individually, it's important to consider their personal motivator. Start by defining what makes a great teammate and ask them to recite it. Then ask how that definition will help them achieve their goals, filling in the blank with their specific motivator. This creates an emotional attachment to both the motivator and being a great teammate. When it comes to the motivator, keep in mind this will probably come down to an individual level, coaching someone individually. So let's take our definition of a great teammate. Again, the formula, a great teammate is by doing what? Fill in the blank with attributes and actions. Now, when you have that definition, think about state and ask. It's a very cool technique. State to somebody. Now, Tom, remember, a great teammate is? Recite the definition and then use your and how question. And how will that help you? And then fill in the blank with what their motivator is, which could be becoming a future leader, maybe moving to another department, working more with statistics or what have you. So when you have a definition of a great teammate, you can say, Tom, remember, definition of a great teammate is? Provide that definition and then you can say, and how will that serve you as it relates to your goal of? And fill in the blank. That, again, will create that emotional attachment, not only to the motivator, but also how being a great teammate supports that motivator.
