Tina Baker, who has worked as a supervisor and bus driver for nearly 48 years, is now studying for her business administration degree at Strayer University. She has learned and utilized various skills throughout her career, including problem-solving, communication, and relationship-building. Tina shares her personal experience of dealing with change, specifically the loss of her father, and how she used problem-solving and communication skills to seek help and improve her behavior. She emphasizes the importance of these skills in everyday life and concludes that embracing change with a positive mindset is crucial. Despite the challenges, she believes that these skills will always serve a purpose, even beyond dealing with change. Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Tina Baker. I have gone from being employed full-time as a site supervisor for security in Greensboro, North Carolina. I have also been employed with the school system, driving the school bus. Both of these jobs, I have been there for nearly 48 years. And I have accomplished my goal as being a wonderful supervisor and bus driver by using employable skills. Now, in 2019, I became a student at Strayer University in Greensboro, North Carolina, studying for my bachelor's degree in business administration. I have studied numerous courses from 2019 to 2023. And this quarter, I am studying philosophy. Now, philosophy is the study of knowledge, reality, and the existence. The skills that I have been using throughout my years of being employed are agility, problem solving, relationship building, innovation, communication, productivity, result driven, self and social awareness, and technology. I will only be summarizing three of those skills that connect to my philosophy of change. A reaction to change is sometimes scary and challenging. I know it is for me. And I'm sure it is for each and every one of you. Now, an example of this change is when my dad didn't have much time to live, which was terrifying for me to accept, terrifying for me to be around. When my dad did pass away, my negative thinking was out of control. And I was furious at everyone. I was displaying negative and unsettling behavior towards everyone. This behavior was from throwing things, cussing people out, doing unnecessary things, not communicating like I'm supposed to, closing myself off from everyone. I knew later on that I needed to change how I was thinking and how I was dealing with change. This was when I needed to use my problem solving skills so that I can understand the problem and so I can understand how to process the change. And I realized that I needed to work on finding a solution. I then moved forward by using my communication skills so that I can seek out help and guidance from not my family, but a professional therapist. Someone who can help me with my behavior problems, my outbursts, and how to receive and process information, how to accept change. After having many conversations and long hourly sessions with this therapist, I was able to start working on building relationships back with my family and friends. This was a challenge, but I succeeded through it. Daily, I will encounter a situation where as I will have to face a change. Whether taking a detour from my daily routine, such as taking the same route home from work. Going from paying my bills in person to paying some of my bills online with a credit card. Now, this was a huge change that I had to deal with and I had to work through because I was not used to a whole lot of change. I didn't know how to process it. But with a lot of help from the professor that I was seeing, I was able to manage that. I am constantly faced with challenging changes. And as I think about it, I have learned much about accepting changes. People will always find themselves in so many different types of situations where they will encounter some type of change. And it is best to take a deep breath and then react with a positive mindset. Now, these are things that I learned how to do. And it is very helpful and successful. These skills that I have briefly summarized in my presentation is problem solving, in which I have identified a problem by accepting a change that occurred in my life. Communication is a part of interacting with others, reaching out to others, sitting down to have a conversation with someone. Listening is a part of communication. Writing is a part of communication. These skills are very helpful. They're helpful in our everyday lives. They are very functional. Relationship building is a skill that focuses on connecting with others. Now, in conclusion, regarding my philosophy of change, I have reviewed the skills I have used as part of my experiences. These skills are an essential part of my daily routine and life. These 10 skills are used daily while I am taking my courses online in school. Communicating with my professor. Asking questions. Answering questions. Responding to my fellow classmates in the discussion board. We as people would not be where we are today, nor who we are, if it was not for the use of the 10 skills that I have mentioned above. These skills will serve a purpose at some point, even if not for change. Change is something that I will continue to work on because it can be a difficult one to deal with or one that comes with ease. Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Tina Baker.
