Baroreceptors in the carotid artery and aortic arch detect an increase in blood pressure from the heart rate increased during running. This causes an increase in the frequency of action potential sent down the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerve to the cardiac and vasomotor control centers. In response, the cardiac control centers increase the parasympathetic stimulation to the SA node, which decreases the heart rate and also decreases the sympathetic stimulation, which also decreases the heart rate. The vasomotor control center decreases sympathetic stimulation to blood vessels, causing vasodilation. These control centers allow blood pressure and heart rate to stay within homeostatic ranges when blood pressure gets too high or low at all times, including when we are running.
