The recent squad announcement for South Africa's Test tour to New Zealand raises the question of whether playing for your country is still important or if it's all about the money. Players are opting out of international series in favor of T20 leagues. Lesser nations complain about not getting enough test cricket but fail to send their best players to compete with bigger nations. Playing for your country will always be the greatest honor in cricket. Are we on the verge of the death of Test and international cricket? With the recent squad announcement for South Africa's next Test tour to New Zealand being littered with a number of uncapped players, including its side's captain Neil Brand, the question must be asked, is playing for your country important anymore, or is it all about the money? I do understand that the South African board has heavily favoured players to play in their SA T20 tournament, but a side that seems like every time they do something well is often followed up by their board or management shooting themselves in the foot. This is one of a number of cases in which players are opting out of international series in favour of the T20 circuit. Recently we've also seen David Warner wanting a hero send-off from his country, then followed up by opting out of T20 internationals versus the West Indies in the upcoming months. West Indies themselves have had three of their best players in Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder and Nicolas Pourin not interested on one of their most important tours in their calendar. I do find ironic that the boards of lesser nations are the first to cry out that they either aren't getting enough test cricket, or that the big boys in India, England and Australia aren't supporting them, but aren't able to sort out their own backyards by ensuring they're sending their best players to compete with these nations. Many kids growing up I'm sure dream of representing their nations rather than playing in any of these T20 or T10 Mickey Mouse leagues you find around the globe. Playing for and representing your country has been, is and will always be the greatest honour there can be in cricket.
