The speaker, Nehemiah Deuce, presents his video research project on the role of social, environmental, and individual factors in shaping the career outcomes of American football athletes. He discusses the lack of research in this area and his primary research, including interviews with teammates and coaches. He cites sources that highlight the psychological impact of football, the importance of social networks in career advancement, and the need for improved safety measures in the sport. Deuce concludes that social networks, environmental conditions, and individual characteristics all play a role in football outcomes. He suggests further research on these factors in children and youth athletes. Despite limitations, this study provides valuable insights for athletes, coaches, and stakeholders in the sports industry. Hello, my name is Nehemiah Deuce, and today I will present my video research project. For my research paper, I examined the role social, environmental, and individual factors play in shaping career outcomes of American football athletes. Figures like Barry Sanders and Tom Brady have served as inspirations of countless, however, similar levels of success to these figures remain a challenge despite aspirations or talent. Before reviewing the findings of the study, we must begin by defining the research area. The research area focuses on exploring the intricate dynamics that influence the careers of American football athletes. Athletes face many challenges and opportunities throughout their career, from navigating social relationships within teams and communities, to adapting to verify environmental conditions and leveraging their individual strengths and weaknesses. Of the secondary sources I found emphasized that there was a lack of research examining the complexity of factors in sports psychology. However, it was clear that there was a connection within my research question. My primary research also mirrored a connection as I interviewed my teammates and coaches about their perspectives regarding American football outcomes. Now that I have introduced my topic, let's jump into the research I conducted to answer my research question. My research question for this project was, what role do social network, environmental conditions, and individual characteristics play in shaping the career trajectory and performance outcomes of American football athletes? I initiated a comprehensive search for primary and secondary sources to augment the findings of my prior investigations through the Youngstown University database. Each of the selected sources maintained a thematic relevance to the focal point of my research inquiry, and statistical analysis was not necessary. The following sources provided quantitative data for my study. Here's source number one. Many players experienced mental health challenges post-termination due to the central role football plays in their identity. According to Wilkinson, 55% of the surveyed players exhibited clinical levels of psychological distress within 21 days of being released. The article reports out of 168 participants, 40.5% scored high on the athletic identity measurement scale, with 16.4% indicating strong social identity, 11.5% indicating inclusivity, and 12.3% indicating negative effectivity. Another source provided qualitative evidence. Jenkins put in a good word for him with the league's Toronto Argonauts, and they offered him a contract. In this seemingly lucky twist of fate, Stiggers transformed his prospects of playing for the NFL from seemingly impossible to achievable. Stiggers' connection with John Jenkins provided a chance to make a comeback into the league. Although Stiggers does not come from a rich network background, the social network he found with Jenkins provided the leverage he needed to change his career trajectory. Now let's look at one more source. In the discourse, A Safer Game for All Who Play, the importance of addressing environmental conditions in American football is underscored. The speech highlights the imperative for all improved safety measures within the league to mitigate the risk of injuries, which often hinders players' ability to pursue and sustain careers in the sport. Despite efforts to mitigate risk, the commissioner implicitly acknowledges the inherent unpredictability of environmental conditions, such as injuries, which profoundly impact players' career trajectories and performance outcomes. From the accumulation of these three articles, it is clear that social network, environmental conditions, and individual characteristics play a role in American football outcomes. However, let's examine the key factors of these articles as they relate to the research question. Source 1 suggests that athletes form a strong social identity link to the sport, which can lead to negative effectivity if not adequately addressed. Consequently, this infers that football players develop a significant identity attachment to the sport, and its removal may have adverse effects on their mental health. This psychological impact of football on athletes underscores the importance of individual characteristics in shaping career outcomes. Certain players may be more vulnerable to mental health issues due to their deep-rooted identification with the sport. Individual characteristics, such as self-esteem, are crucial in career performance and trajectory. Social performance outcomes contribute to increased happiness, which in turn can enhance on-field performance. In Source 2, we see Stiggers' connection with John Jenkins provide a chance to make a comeback into the league. The narrative of NFL draft prospect Qantas Stiggers, as depicted in Baumgarten's article, exemplifies the transformative power of social connections in shaping players' prospects. Stiggers' association with John Jenkins provided a pivotal opportunity for career advancement, highlighting the significance of social networks and navigating the competitive landscape of professional football. Lastly, in Source 3, the speech highlights the imperative for improved safety measures within the league to mitigate the risk of injuries, which often hinder players' ability to pursue and sustain careers in the sport. It is well known that American football is a contact sport that has high risks of injury. The Commissioner acknowledges the complex interplay between environmental factors and player outcomes, highlighting the need for continuous adaptation and innovation in promoting a safer and more sustainable playing environment. This notation further underscores the power injury holds in American football, as it is something the NFL is working to improve. The comprehensive analysis of social networks, environmental conditions, and individual characteristics provide valuable insight into the nuanced dynamics shaping the career trajectories and performance outcomes of American football athletes. It is clear that there is correlation between social networks, environmental conditions, and individual characteristics' impact on career trajectory and performance. By recognizing and addressing the multifaceted influences at play within the sport, stakeholders can work towards fostering a supportive and conducive environment for athletes' development and success. Extensions of this study may detail how these factors exist in children and youth athletes, followed by a comprehensive examination of the impacts on team building and individual development. While the study is limited by its relevance on existing research rather than first-hand statistical analysis, it provides a foundational understanding of the complex dynamics influencing American football outcomes, offering valuable insights for players, coaches, and stakeholders navigating the multifaceted landscape of professional sports. As we reach the end of the video, I invite you to consider the various factors that have shaped your life, be it sports or experiences. There are many connections that can be drawn between life and the environment.
