Compound words are made by combining two or more shorter words. For example, "cupcake" is a compound word that combines "cup" and "cake." Another example is "starfish," which includes "star" and "fish." While "starfish" is a compound word, "shell" is not because it is only one word on its own. Today, we're gonna talk about something new. Let me show you a couple of words. Here's the word cup, and this is the word cake. These are just two short words. But what if I push these two short words together? I just made a new word, a longer word. See, it's cupcake. Cupcake has two short words inside of it, cup and cake. We call words like cupcake compound words. Now let me show you two more words. This is shell, and here's starfish. Can you figure out which one of these words is a compound word? Is it shell or starfish? Pick the word that has two short words inside. Starfish is a compound word because it has two short words inside. Star is the first short word, and fish is the second short word. But shell isn't a compound word because it's just one short word all by itself.
