Well, it's a beautiful day, and welcome to the JIGGIN Podcast. This is Nate Bryan, and I'm the preacher at Rochedale Christian Church. And JIGGIN stands for Jesus Is the Good News, J-I-G-G-N. And speaking of Jesus being the good news, I want to share with us today out of Matthew chapter 1, and specifically looking here at when the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph. And the angel, he appears to Joseph, and in verse 21, tells Joseph about Mary. He says, She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. And that there is inherently the good news, that Jesus came, and came to save his people from their sins. And anyways, if you're here listening to this podcast, and you have not heard the gospel, just know this, that Jesus Christ, again, as we just shared, came to save his people from their sins. And that he lived a perfect sinless life, he died on a cross for our sins, he was put in a tomb, and that he walked out of that tomb three days later. And anyhow, we'll talk more about that, but that's the nuts and bolts of the gospel. And not only, back to Jesus being the good news, but jigging also stands, or is another word that could be used for fishing. You know, you could use a fishing jig, if you will. And so, we know that Jesus, when he called the first apostles, that he had stated, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. So that's something else that we plan to do here with the Jigging Podcast. And today, I am very pleased and happy to welcome our chairman of our Deacons here, Mr. John Dawson. So John, welcome to the Jigging Podcast. Well, thanks for having me, Nate. So John, tell us this, just tell us, what's your faith background? How did you come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? How did I come to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior? I grew up in a Christian home. My parents went to Church of Christ, a little town. If you blinked, Rochester would be a big city next to it. And with Church of Christ, they went with the King James Bible, and I did not understand that a bit. I was interested in the Lord, but I read it and I was confused. I remember, I might have told you this, I remember thinking, I want to give my life to Christ. But I remember reading where it says, go and sin no more. And I thought, how in the world am I going to be able to do that? I'm going to mess up. There's no one perfect, only Jesus. And I remember thinking, well, maybe if I lived to be old when I was a kid, that before maybe I could be baptized and maybe I could run over by a train and not make it to heaven. When you're a kid, you think crazy things. I couldn't go and accept Jesus Christ as my Savior and lie and say, I'm going to not sin and lie to Him. I couldn't do it. So I never accepted it. And I just went on being a teenager, doing what I wanted, which was not being a Christian. I wasn't a Christian, but I wasn't acting like a son of my parents, who both were Christians. And I just went on, went on, did my thing. I remember in my 20s, I was working a night shift and I saw a New Testament laying on the desk. I'm going to read that. I started reading it. I read it over and over and over and over. And I thought, well. But it was a King James. I thought, I still don't understand why I'm reading that. And then life went on. That's when I was about 22 and moving on up. And I was in my 30s. I think around 36. I was out in my garden, right out there. I loved working in the garden. And my young son was out there in vacation Bible school here. Rochestell was going on. He goes, Dad, look at those kids. They're having fun. You think I could go? I said, yeah, you can go over there. Go ahead. And so he went. And they're thinking. And then all of a sudden, I'm thinking, oh, man. I started thinking about God and church. And I remember I was home and out there in my garden. And my mind talked to me. I don't know what. And I could hear the Lord say, how long, John, are you just going to goof off and not listen to me? I've talked to you different times in your life. And I'm thinking, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I went and talked to my wife. I said, hey, I think we need to go to church. So we talked about it. And we started going to Rochestell Church. And after about a month or so, my wife and I said, we're going to have to get baptized. And we both came up and got baptized. And that's how I started. It was awesome. So it took, you know, you live right here just on the opposite side of the block north of the church. And so VBS was going on. And that's what drew your son. I guess that's one way that the Lord started working on you again is through that, which is cool, especially with us knowing VBS is coming up next month. But, you know, to know that it was kind of in some ways through your son that the Lord started really working on you again. And then it got the wheels turning and got you back into the church. So you guys were baptized here then. And I'm just curious, who was the preacher here at that time? It was the one that had been here the longest. Okay. I'm just trying to remember if that would have been, was it John Nolan or was it well before that? After John Nolan. After John Nolan. Mick Buchanan? Before. Okay, before that. He's the one I can't remember. He's been here the longest. Okay. Because when he came here and did a guest speaking, I told him, yeah, he baptized me. And I said, I didn't know if the people of the church was more surprised or you. Right. He started laughing. Right. Okay, cool. So you kind of, the next question I was going to ask is sort of what brought you to Rochdale Christian Church. But that already sort of got explained, I guess, through your son. Is there anything you would add to it? I guess, you know, I guess maybe more of a question I might ask is how did you end up in Rochdale? Were you from Rochdale originally or how did you end up in this town? I met my wife through work and she said she was from Rochdale. I thought she was talking about Rosedale. We used to call Rosedale Rochdale to make fun of them. Okay, I hear you. And I thought, oh, she's from Rochdale. No, there is a Rochdale. And I met her and we even got married in this church. Okay. Gotcha. Awesome. Cool. So she was from here initially. She sort of, she drug you this way. So that was how you ended up here. I gotcha. And, well, that's good. And so, well, we just, you know, I love hearing, I guess everybody's got a different story. You know, we all came to, the Lord worked on us at different times. You know, we've got, like you said, I love that your son and DBS all played a little bit of a role in all that. And that was how He reeled you back in. So let's move to Scripture because I love talking Scripture. And I know you and I have a lot of similarities on some of our favorite portions or portions where we, you know, like to spend time. So let's start by just talking about if you had maybe one favorite verse or a favorite verse or two, what would it be? And if you want to, read it to us or share it with us. It's my favorite. That would be James chapter 1, verse 26. Really, it's the whole book, but 26. I'll share that with you. Well, that's a great little section. And I love, I mean, when you look at that, and, you know, quite honestly, it's not a sermon that I have specifically done yet, but it could easily turn in that those two verses are very similar.
