The NatureLab podcast is introduced, featuring researchers from the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (RNEC). RNEC is a public research institute that focuses on science and technology in various fields of civil engineering. They conduct innovative research in material science, structural engineering, geotechnics, and environmental engineering. RNEC's Hydraulics and Environment Department explores the relationship between human activity, the environment, and hydraulic systems, with a focus on water resources management, flood risk assessment, environmental impact studies, and nature-based solutions. The Urban and Territorial Studies Unit focuses on architecture, urbanism, and social sciences, emphasizing the territorial and environmental dimensions of development. The Information Technology and Computer Infrastructure Unit supports RNEC with information systems, data management, artificial intelligence, and data science techniques. The NatureLab project brings togeth Welcome NatureLabbers! We are very excited to present the first edition of the NatureLab podcast, a series of podcasts that will be recorded during the NatureLab project. Today we have Ana Estela Barbosa and Margarida Rubio from RNEC, and the Fernandes João Barata and myself, Miguel Maia from SPI. I would like to first ask Ana Estela Barbosa about the project coordination and how has it been to coordinating the project since inception. Hello, it's really a pleasure to be here with all of you. So, you know that I'm a researcher at the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, and this is a public research institute that is dedicated to science and technology, and it carries out activities in multiple fields of civil engineering and also other related areas. We were founded in 1946, and we are embracing a vast range of exercises, and we are conducting innovative research in several fields, including material science, structural engineering, geotechnics and environmental engineering. Of course, when it relates to NatureLab, there are three sectors of RNEC that are ensuring the project coordination and also contributing to its main activities. I would like to mention all of them. So, one of them is the Hydraulics and Environment Department, and this is a division focused on the relationship between human activity, the environment and hydraulic systems. And we have a multidisciplinary approach because we are exploring areas such as water resources management, flood risk assessment, the post-environmental impact studies and nature-based solutions. So, we are dedicated to develop sustainable solutions for water-related challenges, and we strive to enhance resilience against natural disasters while also preserving ecosystems. And this is also to show how we are working in a multidisciplinary team. The other contributor to NatureLab is our Urban and Territorial Studies Unit, and this unit focuses on research, development and innovation in the fields of architecture, urbanism and social sciences with an emphasis on the territorial and environmental dimensions of social, economic and cultural development. So, we can also understand that this unit also tackles all these challenges of dialogue with experts from different backgrounds, and we are doing this also in NatureLab. And last but not least, we have the support at RNEC from the Information Technology and Computer Infrastructure Unit, and this unit, among other competencies, it works in the development, application and training in information systems and technologies, on data management and preservation, on data fusion and centralized data repositories, as well as artificial intelligence and data science techniques. So, we are really a multidisciplinary team. This sounds fascinating.
