It's a beautiful day. It's a beautiful day. It's a beautiful day. It's a beautiful day. It's a beautiful day. It's a beautiful day. Again, who do we have with us today? Okay, so who is on the phone is a beautiful young lady with a warm and friendly demeanor. We met her at her church event held several weekends ago, so she is absolutely remarkable and very respectful. She was born in Miami, Florida, but raised in Guyana and South Florida. She earned her AA at Broward College in language pathology and audiology. I'm sorry. She continued her education at Florida International University where she earned a bachelor's degree in health science. She earned her master's degree in speech language pathology and applied behavior analysis from Nova Southeastern University and Arizona State University. She has a MS master of speech language pathology, a CC, which is certified of clinic competence, and a SLP board certified speech language pathologist. She is the CEO of Speech Line Therapy Services, LLC. Her skills are highly regarded and endorsed in early intervention, special education, and development disabilities. She attends Golden Gate Seventh-day Adventist Church. She is married to Greg Henry. They have a beautiful one-year-old daughter, and she is currently living with her family in Naples, Florida. Max and CPL, here on the phone in Naples is Janine Smith. Janine, please say hello to our cultural praise listeners. Greetings to all the cultural praise listeners. I am so happy to be here with you all today. Wow. It's such a blessing to have you here with us. We're so thrilled and excited to have you. I mean, hey, the minute we met you, we just said, hey, we just got to have you on our broadcast. This is wonderful to have you on our broadcast today. But listen, even though I did such a great introduction of you because of all the things and accomplishments you have in your life have accomplished, please, nobody can tell or share about themselves better than you can. So go ahead and give us an introduction about who you are to our listeners, and tell them a little bit more about yourself. Okay. Well, thank you. I just want to say a big thanks to both of you for having me on. When I met you guys, I was so taken and captivated. I don't know if that's the right word, but by the love that you two have for one another. And I just want you to know I want to be like you when I grow up. Everybody says, be better, be better. My grandmother used to say, no, be better than me. No, you guys are amazing. The love that you've demonstrated for one another as a husband and a wife, it is such a beautiful example, and it's so refreshing. So I'm happy to be in your presence. Thank you for having me. You did such a wonderful job with the introduction, but I guess I can say a little more. So my name is Janine, and I am first-generation American. Both of my parents are Guyanese, and I was blessed to kind of live on both sides of the track. So when I was six months as a baby, I did move to Guyana, and I grew up there. I did live in the Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, for a year and back into Guyana, but we came down for good to the States, to Miami, back in 1991 or 1992. And I continued my schooling here, so I'm grateful to have that upbringing in the Caribbean because it makes you, for me, it made me a little more tenacious, and it made me grateful for the small things. I am currently a speech-language pathologist, a certified autism specialist, and a soon-to-be board-certified behavior analyst. So that's pretty much it. That pretty much sums up who I am for now. Well, I don't think that it did. I was listening and looking at the introduction, and I said, wait a minute. Something is definitely missing here. Classic Care did indicate that we met a few weekends back, and it was at an event, and also at that event, we were able to experience an angel in the room through your voice in singing. There's nothing on this introduction that says that you are, I don't know, maybe you need to include that in the introduction. Share with the listeners your love for singing and the fact that you also share in praise and worship and all that good stuff. Okay, so I do sing. I love to sing. I grew up being the loudest one singing in my house with my siblings telling me to shut up and be quiet. But now, thank God, he has tuned my voice to where I'm able to minister to the masses in such a mighty way for the kingdom of God. So that's a blessing. And I do love to cook, too. I don't know if you guys got to taste the brown stew tofu. We certainly did. We tasted brown stew tofu. That was delicious. Oh, my goodness. You know, that's where we are, plant-based right now, so that was so delicious. And now I know how to cook tofu in a different way. Yes, awesome. But before we get into the questions, I want to ask, because I'm also a vocalist, and I was also, you know, I'm accustomed to the vocalese and exercises and what have you. Is there any connection to that along with speech pathology? Because you might have an individual that might be interested in, you know, being able to exercise their vocals through singing, but there's a problem with their speech. Is there any connection with that? There is a large connection to it because in order for us to sing effectively, we have to be able to use diaphragmatic breathing, breathing with abdominal support, and you have to be able to say phonate or say the words correctly in order to produce that sound. So there's a lot of working pieces. And so there is a connection. And also within our scope of practice, we work with individuals with vocal cord dysfunction. So with a lot of singers, teachers, pastors, they may have they may use their voice a lot, and because they use their voice a lot, they may get hoarse and they may have some type of dysfunction, whether it's nodules, swelling, laryngitis, and we work in a therapeutic setting to teach people how to use their voice correctly to prevent those disorders from happening. Awesome, awesome. Awesome, awesome. So what we're going to do is since we're talking about with Guyana and all of that, it is so wonderful to hear that you grew up in Guyana. Tell us a little bit about Guyana, and Max would love to hear about the pepper pot. He's all about the food. Well, pepper pot is our national dish. Like what oxtail is to Jamaica, pepper pot is to Guyana. Wow. So if you ever go to Guyana or if you ever go to a Guyanese restaurant, you have to get some pepper pot because there's nothing like it. You have oxtail. You have cow foot. There's so many parts of the beef that's in it, and the gravy is so succulent, and what is used to make it? Now you're going to get me passionate because I love to cook and I love to talk about food, but what is in it is we have our browning in Guyana is called cas rip, and cas rip is different from the regular browning because it's a little more sweet and savory, so it has that umami flavor. So that's why when you taste pepper pot, there's like a distinctive taste, and you can't forget your hard dough bread or the white bread that you just got to sop up all of those succulent juices with to really enjoy it. So that is something that I definitely love. Growing up in Guyana, it was such a blessing, and I'm grateful that our parents allowed us that because it taught me to be grateful. We didn't have much. You know, when you're in the Caribbean, all of this TV and all of these different distractions that you have here in the U.S., you don't really have that, so you learn to be content. You learn to play with the groom, play outside. You learn to enjoy the sunset. You learn to enjoy nature. You go for walks and pick fruits off the trees. You learn to enjoy those small things, and, you know, we both had family that lived in the country and that lived in the city. So we lived in Georgetown, the city, but then we had family that lived in the country, and in the country, after a certain time, the water will shut off, so you have to walk outside to get to the bathroom. So you learn to appreciate the small things, and growing up in Guyana has allowed me to be adaptable. So now as an adult, I can adapt to any situation. You can put me in a hut. You can put me in a mansion, and I can adapt accordingly. That's right. That's like Paul said. I know how to be a base and how to be a bound. I know how to be a base, and I know how to be a bound. Yes, indeed. Well, that's where the tenacity, as you indicated in your introduction, comes from. You know, being an islander, you tend to say, wait a minute now. I can survive under any situation. But I want to sneak in here one question that was probably not sent to you in reference to being from Guyana. You should be able to answer this. The truth be told is this pepper pot, getting back to serious things, this pepper pot. He's all about the food, y'all. I know. To be honest with you, the makeup of the pepper pot. Listen, folks, I'm going to let you know. I'm not from Guyana, but I'm going to tell you what it really is. You know, it was just a bunch of leftover food that they threw in one pot and dropped some pepper in it, and they call it pepper pot. Isn't that the truth? Absolutely not. You know what I mean? We're going to have to get together for you to really see what this thing is about. You know, for all the users, make sure you Google Guyana pepper pot because it is pepper pot, so you can see how good this dish looks. Yes, yes. Every time I see you, your mouth will be watering. Yes, especially if you love that soupy, watery, thick flavor of like a gravy. I mean, it should be so delicious. But everyone, you're listening to Cultural Praise with Brother Max and Kathy Kebber. This is Marvelous Monday, and on Marvelous Monday we do have guests on the phone, and we have Janine Smith, board-certified speech-language pathologist and CEO of Speech Line Therapy Services, LLC, in Naples, Florida. She was raised in Guyana, and I have a special treat for her. And all y'all listening in Guyana, here is a special song I fell in love with. Yes, it is chutney. It is Indian music from Guyana, and it's by an artist out of Guyana, and his name is Anil Aniz, and the song is called Goodness and Mercy. We're going to be back right after this. Enjoy. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart and my heart Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart When I was lost and living for my past My life was filled with troubles and regrets And I read the voice from the world That taught me to follow the streets and the road Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart The things I did left me sorrowing My life was filled with pain and suffering Crisis is my life and dream is a victory Now I have the power to fight the enemy Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart I tried to do from my heart But I struggled from the very start Don't be my savior and show me my path Now I can do better in my very heart Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life Goodness and mercy shall do my heart and my heart and my heart and my heart Indian music from Guyana I fell in love with that What do you know about that, Janayne? Well, that's my first time hearing it but I mean the beat is very familiar because that is definitely a lot of Indian music that is definitely our culture the soca, the reggae and I love to see that gospel the new gospel sound with the African beats and all of those things that I'm coming into play Well, Janayne, I was surprised to find out that Guyana is not a part of the Caribbean Explain to the listeners the origins of Guyana Pardon me, I didn't hear you You said it's not a part of the Caribbean but it is the only English-speaking country in South America but we are considered a part of the Caribbean Yes, yes, yes, yes That was surprising, that was new to me Yes, yes, when my best friend she's from Guyana and she grew up but now she's living here in the United States in Florida also but she also introduced me to that gentleman there Arnel Anez and he is an artist there in Guyana but she had told us that same thing and she was telling Max about the pepper pot but she don't cook the pepper pot It's so interesting because when you think about Caribbean culture our origins is in Africa and when our ancestors were captured they were dropped off to different Caribbean islands and they happened to drop some slaves to Trinidad and then they dropped some to Guyana and that is how our culture came about that's a part of the story obviously not the whole story but we all come from one vein and that is our roots are in Africa but we were just scattered and separated Yes, yes Well, well, well, let's get into the questioning about your profession in pathology and what made you decide to venture into that? So, interesting story when my parents divorced and when they did my mom threw us into so many different extracurricular activities and one of the activities that I was very intrigued by was sign language and I learned at a very young age to interpret for deaf people and I was blessed with the opportunity to join a church group that also ministered to the deaf community so we would go to deaf churches or have a sign language area set up where a lot of deaf communities would come in and we would minister to them and being exposed to deaf culture I thought that this population of individuals they were so misunderstood and as a child I often felt misunderstood and at that point I said Lord as a little girl at 11 to 12 years old I'm like Lord I don't know what I want to do but I know when I get older I want to serve individuals that have communication impairments or problems communicating because they can be very misunderstood they can be ostracized and cast out and I felt like that was my purpose the Lord put that desire in my heart from a child and as I got older I learned about the field of speech language pathology and how it impacts individuals with communication issues and how we serve those communities Oh wow that is so amazing I tell you I truly believe that God really placed you in our life and us in your life because of two things that I wanted to do one of them was my daughter and I to do sign language I always wanted to but I never really got a chance to I know someone who taught it in the Bahamas she said none of her children have learned it but she was good with it but I never really seemed to have taken the time to and when I wanted to then we had moved away but sign language is something and she's a school teacher now our youngest one she's a school teacher now and she said that I would love to teach she's a preschool teacher that is and my kids a little bit of sign language and I said well one day we're going to learn how to do this because I always wanted to and you're never too old to learn also not everybody knows and at my age people don't know sometimes I get a little nervous and people would sort of pick it out and Max really helps me a lot but I studied as a child I studied and I stumbled and sometimes it's hard for me I always tell people it's amazing that I am doing this because I didn't really want to but then Max brought it out of me and now I am doing this and I feel comfortable and we were just talking the other day about fear on the weekend we spoke about a couple weekends ago we talked about fear and Max was talking and then I read about Dale Carnegie where it says that the more you do something that's the best way to conquer and it now is instilling me now we've been doing this for a year and nobody really noticed and that sometimes I feel a little nervous that I do stutter a little bit but then I know there's a lot of famous people who have overcome it and I was so blessed to know how many of these famous people stuttered and I was like wow, taken aback so this is a blessing to have you in our life because as a speech language pathologist I want you to tell those persons who are listening who don't know what it is and probably have the same problem and probably have a child who is basically at that age and they don't know what to do you can tell them exactly what you do and what your job entitles Yes, before you answer though Classic Care indicated that she stuttered and stammered is there a difference in the two or is it the same thing? Well, it's stuttering it's the same those words are used interchangeably and I just want to commend you that you are doing a phenomenal job and continue to do what you're doing and a lot of times fear you said something fear is false evidence appearing real so continue to push through and continue to do what you're doing and obviously it's working but to answer the question stuttering and stammering those are two words that are used interchangeably now there are different types of stutter like you can stutter in a different way so you have part word repetitions and I'll just name a few off the top of my head you have part word repetitions where someone may repeat a part of a word like the, the, the, the, the like if they're trying to say apple they may say at the beginning of the word like app, app but they can't get the O out then you have whole word repetitions where they would repeat the entire word like the, the, the, the, the you have interjections and you know what there are so many famous people that have it when you look at President Obama he is such an eloquent speaker but a lot of people don't realize President Obama, he stutters he has interjections the type of stuttering he has is interjections and when he speaks he says uh like he does a lot of um, uh but he, it's so seamless and a lot of times it's okay for you to stutter it's just, it's all about managing it being aware and um, getting the proper support to encourage those fluency enhancing strategies so that you can have an easy onset of speech Max, Max taught me that too because when, hey, I used to say uh and stuff a lot too and I thank God for him my dad and my grandmother who really helped me a lot that I never really got teased about it because people didn't realize because I wasn't really uh, you know like that stutterer I just sort of like sometimes some of the words it seems like I wasn't bringing it up but I was eloquent with it right, but you know why that happens that happens because your brain your brain and spinal cord they're the control center of your body we have speech and language centers within our brain and a lot of times when you're trying to say a message your brain knows what you you know what you want to say but your brain has to process it and then send it to your mouth to spit it out so a lot of times it could be your brain just trying to process that information so while your brain catches up to get the message out you have fillers like um and it gives you a moment to get that to get the word that you're trying to say that's amazing so that explains why as a little boy I could remember when my parents pinched me the words did not come out completely so the brain the brain and the pain were not interacting together and I said it it was a stuttering going it was a real stuttering going on there he got jokes he does indeed he has jokes for days always, always so tell me something I know you are the CEO of your own company what type of company is your speech line therapy service and how long have you been in existence okay so we are an independent and state licensed practice in South Florida our main location is in Miami Gardens, Florida since having a baby I do run everything remotely from here and my staff is still in the Miami Pembroke Pines, North Miami the greater Miami and Broward area they're still working there while I run things remotely here my daughter is getting older it was very important for me to be home with her during this time where she's so young but soon I will be sticking my toes in the water to branch out and to open a practice here in Naples by the grace of God we will be celebrating to God be the glory to God be the glory for the great things that he has done we will be can make it right Who can turn your rainy days into sunshine Who picked up the pieces when you threw it all away God did it, God did it Welcome back everyone, we're so glad that you're sticking and staying with us This is Marvelous Monday, we hope you're having a marvelous Monday And we thank you so very much for having your marvelous Monday with us And we have on the phone with us Janine Smith She's a board certified speech language pathologist And she's the CEO of Speech Land Therapy Services LLC in Naples and also in Miami, Florida So we have her still on the line and we're so excited to have her with us But we were talking a lot about how it's stuttering and how the brain functions and everything like that I also want to know from you about autistic I know you probably dealt with some autistic children before I have a cousin who he is autistic but he does not speak at all And then we do have an adopted daughter that her son, our grandson He is autistic but he's only about 3 going on 4 But he speaks, he can say words and he's excited about speaking and knowing things And he can identify by speaking So what is the difference in the brain function with autistic? So to begin with, I am a certified autism specialist And a large portion of the population that we serve in Speech Land Therapy are children with autism So autism is a developmental disability and the cause of it is by differences in the brain No one child is going to look the same And we call it ASD and it's autism spectrum disorders because it is a spectrum of disorders You have some children that are very high functioning where they may just have social pragmatic disorders Where they don't know how to act appropriately in a social setting So they don't understand physical, they don't understand personal boundaries So if they talk to you, they come right in your face because they don't understand personal space They don't understand how to turn take or how to have a conversation They're awkward with those things And then you have on the other end of the spectrum You have children that are non-verbal where they're not speaking They have severe behaviors, whether it's head banging We call it SIB where it's self injurious behaviors Where they injure themselves, they hit themselves and things of that nature So when talking about autism, I try to let people know that it is a spectrum No cases are going to look the same And you do have different levels And with the different levels, it's going to require different levels of support You have some that may need a comprehensive therapy Where they need speech therapy, behavior therapy, occupational therapy And you have some children that are very high functioning Where they would only need speech therapy to address their pragmatic disorders Which is how they use language in a social way or their expressive communication You sure know your stuff, I must say You're so thorough with words for persons who are listening to understand To get the full knowledge of what is going on and how they can deal with it And I know that speech therapy is time consuming It's time consuming for both the parents and the child And it's not enough to have just a therapy session, I know that And the lessons from the session should be carried out throughout the week At home and in community So would you agree? If so, can you explain how this can happen for parents and child? Okay, so the goal of intervention, I do agree And that is why we tell parents all the time We are with your child for such a small amount of time Sometimes three hours a week, so one hour three times a day You are with them, the teacher is with them for a much longer time So the goal of intervention is for the child to generalize and carry over What they are learning in the one-to-one therapy sessions With their teacher, with their peers and even in their home and everyday lives So that is done, that is why we support teachers We provide parent education and we work alongside other disciplines Supporting them to ensure that what we are doing in the therapy setting They are able to do in the real world And that is where the change begins Because it's a team effort, you know, no man is an island And as much as we are effective, we need the support of teachers, parents And other disciplines in order for our clients to be successful Great, great, so tell me, is it common for those persons to have like Temporal outbursts and general conduct issues Which, you know, I know it can be stressful As a speech pathologist, do you consider it a stressful job? Well, I would say I love what I do, so it's not stressful But there is absolutely a lot of outbursts And there sometimes is behavior issues And I just want you to look at it from a different lens And for the viewers as well, a lot of times Their frustration or the behavior issue is due to a breakdown in communication Now, just imagine as an adult, if you wanted to say something You wanted to convey a message to someone But you didn't have the words to say it Or you didn't know how to say it That will cause you to be frustrated If you are hungry or your stomach is hurting And you're trying to tell somebody I'm hungry or I have a pain in my stomach But you don't have the language to tell them that And they're just giving you a toy You're going to throw that toy And what they see is the behavior As opposed to the message that you're trying to communicate So yes, we do see a lot of temporal outbursts And communication issues that can be stressful in the moment But that is why we try to support The child and even the adult as well To communicate in an effective way So that the frustrations can be eliminated And in the severe cases where children have extreme behaviors We would recommend, in addition to speech therapy Behavior intervention And that's why I also went and got a second master's In behavior intervention Because I implement so much behavior in my therapy session And I'm like, I need to get paid for this I can imagine Because I mean, kids who are not autistic Or don't have that type of problem They carry on basically the same way They throw themselves down And they can't get their own way So I can imagine how it is with those kids With a lot of disabilities But tell me, so what are some of the challenges That you had faced during your journey As a speech language pathologist? So one of the main One of the I would say there's a misconception about our role A lot of people don't know what we do And they are like, oh that's just a speech teacher They don't know the depth of How we approach And what is behind what we do And also within our community Within the black and Caribbean community There is a lack of awareness There's a lack of urgency And it's heartbreaking Because a lot of times I see children fall through the cracks And that's one of the reasons Why I opened a practice Because early intervention Research shows that early intervention From birth to three years old Is so effective In remediating speech disorders But a lot of times our children Are not getting enrolled Until they're like 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 When they could have been getting supported Earlier on No, just give the baby some bush tea It seems like there's a lack of awareness So I feel like God placed me here To bring the awareness And to educate individuals That it's okay And if your child has a diagnosis It's not the end of the world There's support that is out here That can help remediate your child And get them to where they need to be Where they're successful So is there a difference Between a speech therapist And a speech pathologist Or are they both the same? Oh, okay, okay, okay It's just a more sophisticated name then In the hospital They usually say speech pathologist In the school settings But it's interchangeable So it's the same Okay, okay So tell me some Before we close Please tell us What are some of the benefits Of being a speech pathologist? What are some of the great benefits Some good things that you can share Of what you do? So I would This field has been so rewarding for me And I think the biggest benefit for me And I have to think about this one Is being a servant And being able to serve It is so rewarding To come into situations With individuals Where they have lost hope Adults that have had strokes Where I've had doctors That have been practicing medicine And they had a massive stroke They moved their ability to walk, to talk And so many different things And they're hopeless And to come in and to be To serve them And helping them to regain Their function So that they can go back To their activities of daily living And even in the lives of children Where they can't talk Where the parents felt Like my child will never be able To say I love you And I have cried with parents When their child We have supported their children Helping them to improve And increase their language Where they're able to say mommy I love you It's the small things Those small things That are so rewarding to me Being able to serve And impact the success Of children and families In the future Wow, wow, so amazing You had such an amazing journey And you're still very young You have a long way to go So I am certain that there's going to be A lot you can accomplish And will accomplish Everyone you have been You're listening to Janine Smith She's a board certified Speech language pathologist And she's the CEO of Speech Land Therapy Services LLC in Naples And also in Miami, Florida And when we come back She's going to give her shout out So don't you go anywhere I'm sure that family and friends That are listening Would want to hear their name When she gives their shout out So don't go anywhere Keep it locked in right here We're going to be back with more But do me a huge favor Would you just wave your hand like this And say God I thank you For your grace Now somebody clap your hands You gave me grace Grace beyond measure Grace with much favor You gave me grace Unlimited grace I live for your glory Strength for my story Unlimited grace You gave me grace Say grace beyond measure Grace beyond measure Grace with much favor You gave me grace Unlimited grace I live for your glory Strength for my story Say unmerited grace Come on somebody clap your hands Give a praise hallelujah Or I would be lost Not much more Not much more Not much more I couldn't hold If it had not been If it had not been For your grace For your grace I wouldn't be here I wouldn't be It's very nice It's very nice Somebody lift your voice and say grace You gave me grace Grace beyond measure Grace with much favor You gave me grace Unlimited grace Unlimited grace I live for your glory Strength for my story Strength for my story Unmerited grace Unmerited grace Let's sing that verse again Or I wouldn't be lost without you Or I wouldn't be lost without you Not much more Not much more I couldn't hold If it had not been If it had not been For your grace For your grace I wouldn't be here I wouldn't be It's very nice It's very nice Or I wouldn't be lost without you Not much more Not much more I couldn't hold If it had not been If it had not been For your grace For your grace I wouldn't be here I wouldn't be It's very nice It's very nice You know Paul prayed that prayer And he asked God to take that thorn from my side And God said back to him My grace is sufficient Can you just say grace?
