Welcome to today's episode, Episode 4, Why Should We Care About Ethics in Healthcare, which we're going to be talking about the role of ethics in healthcare and when and where we see it come up. I'm your host, Kristen, and I'm excited to get into today's podcast. So why should we care about ethics in healthcare? Our guest for today's podcast is a good friend of mine, Kara. Kara is a nursing major here at Emanuel College, and she's going to talk about her role as a nurse in the healthcare field and why she wants to be a nurse. As we know, there are a lot of discrepancies and discrimination within the healthcare field. Kara's going to share her experiences as a nurse thus far and how we see ethics come up in healthcare. Hi, everyone. My name is Kara, and I'm a senior here at Emanuel College in the nursing program. And I got into nursing because I was really into volunteer work all through high school, and I wanted to incorporate the medical field with my interests in social work, and I felt like nursing was the perfect place to combine those interests. Let's get into the podcast where I'm going to ask a few questions to Kara to get more of an insight on this topic. And so when I found out about community health nursing, I knew that was kind of what I wanted to do. So when I got into the clinical setting, I quickly recognized how many healthcare disparities there were and all the negative effects they were having. I knew I wanted to make a difference in eliminating barriers people face when seeking medical treatment, which kind of led me to the work I'm doing now at Boston Healthcare for the Homeless, and I'm also pursuing research in eliminating biases nurses hold regarding the disadvantaged populations. I feel like that population is really misunderstood in the medical world, so just working to... I knew I wanted to make a difference in eliminating barriers people face when seeking medical treatment, which has led me to working at Boston Healthcare for the Homeless, and I'm also pursuing research in eliminating biases nurses hold regarding disadvantaged populations, so that those who are often so misunderstood have a better chance at accessing the healthcare they need without feeling so discriminated against.
