Going into a doctor's office, you would never think something like that would happen. It also says in the article, he started this, quote, as far back as 1989, end quote. That is over 30 years of him sexually abusing patients. It is sad to think that so many women were affected by this and nothing was done about it. In the article that said, quote, you teach your kids to not walk alone, to go in and call the strangers, but how can you prevent this? Tell them to be afraid of your doctor, end quote. It goes with the people who cannot speak English. They see a white coat and think they can trust a doctor. It is sad to know that he was only sentenced three years in prison. Another major success of the Me Too movement was the vast change in the workplaces. The change in workplaces after and during the Me Too movement was a way to show their immense success in a way that allowed women and men to stand up for sexual violence and abuse that they have endured within their careers. One of the largest parts of the Me Too movement was the impact on the entertainment industry. Many celebrities have stepped forward and spoken out about the sexual abuse that they had experienced in the industry, which led people all around the world to feel the confidence to be able to speak out against their personal experiences as well, including people coming forward about sexual abuse that they have endured in the workplace. One of the sources that I have used for research explain that within large industries and businesses, when people hold great power over someone else in the workplace, such as a boss or a CEO, it provokes them to believe that they can have free range to act however they want towards other workers in situations involving sexual abuse. That can make it much easier for them to brush off these situations when it comes to a person of higher power. Because of the intimidation factor and in multiple cases, the bosses and CEOs had allegations against them and there was not much the victim could do about it. The Me Too movement had gained popularity in 2017 and Gen Z is now the first generation to begin their life careers with the after effects of the Me Too movement. At the time when the movement first began to gain traction and people all over started talking, many people did not link the association to their workplace at first because they had no personal experiences or so they thought. Once getting into the world of professional careers, everything had changed. They realized it was not just Hollywood, prominent issue, but since living through the movement, understanding the effects, they were able to keep that change that Me Too was able to create and feel empowered to speak out. One of the articles stated, I think most employees today feel more empowered that they are able to speak out than they were before the Me Too era. From Savage 23, this implies that the movement has allowed people to realize that this issue is everywhere around them and with such strong advocates entering the workforce, there is much more being done with these situations. Another large issue is that the Me Too movement has brought to light was jobs that were mostly male dominant and all women that had come forward about the toxicity that they had to deal with that was merely ignored every single day. To be more specific, it was very prominent in the trucking industry. In the truck driving world, there are little to no women who are employed in this field. There is so much misogyny and abuse and it is unacceptable. Women would get sexually harassed daily, even in front of other coworkers, and there was nothing done about it. Even when brought to their officials, it was simply brushed off and if anything, it would make the situation worse, leading to more sexist remarks and inappropriate behavior. Since the Me Too movement had come about, women had gone to social media to widely explain their individual experiences. 300 women within the trucking industry had spoken up about sexual abuse in their workplace. This created a large lawsuit against many large companies that used truck services in an attempt for these women to serve justice after years of silence. What I have gathered from researching this portion of the movement is that the workplace should be a safe place for people to be able to indulge in their careers and aim for whatever they are passionate about, and no person should have the power to stop them. Women and men should all be treated the same, especially when they are trying to work together. There should be no difference in treatment. The ideology of someone's position should have no bias in situations like this. The Me Too movement has been able to make this discrimination have a complete turnaround and allow people to feel able to stand up against mistreatment in the workplace. Callie, can you talk a little bit about how the movement raised awareness? Speaking of celebrities, Alyssa Milano is an American actress who took to Twitter to spread awareness. On October 15, 2017, nearly 10 years after the Me Too movement began, Alyssa Milano tweeted, quote, if you've been sexually harassed or assaulted, write Me Too as a reply to this tweet, end quote. The tweet quickly went viral and acted as a catalyst for the Me Too movement. As Milano said in the interview, the tweet gained many responses and provoked the hashtag Me Too that became widely used by members of the movement and others across many different social media platforms. I also think it's important that we recognize the hashtag's role in dismantling the silent culture that was so widely accepted at the time. Generally nowadays, society encourages victims to speak up and share their stories instead of silencing them. Due to the trending hashtag, awareness of sexual violence has risen, and it is because of this that when victims share their stories, they are more often believed rather than being dismissed like so many victims have been before. Public opinion revolving sexual violence has shifted greatly due to the tweet and the Me Too movement as a whole. In an article from ScienceDirect.com, researchers compared changes in opinion over time. Surveys were conducted at the peak of the movement and then again six months later. The results showed a shift in public attitude and support for survivors and victim blaming. Research demonstrated that the peak of the movement, quote, dismissal of sexual assault was lower. Importantly, this reduction persisted after six months, end quote. The research also shows that the change in attitudes was specifically due to the Me Too movement and not just any other gender movement that has a similar cause, like the Women's March. In an article written by Fatima Gutierrez, the trends of the movement after the tweet was posted are evaluated. Between December of 2018 and May of 2019, millions of tweets were posted using the hashtag. In relation to some of the other subtopics discussed throughout this podcast, the impact on social opinions can also be impacted by things like high profile cases and changes in legislation. The high profile convictions of celebrities, politicians, and other influential members of society has the ability to impact the opinion of society. These cases expose the general public to the abuse of power that is utilized by these perpetrators to commit these acts of sexual violence. When these types of cases are brought to light, the response from the general public is usually an outpour of support for the victims who came forward. The amount of high profile cases that have been in the public eye impacts society's likelihood of believing victims and supporting their fight for justice. The Me Too movement rallied to work towards gaining concrete change in legislature and policy. The government and certain institutions responded to the movement by implementing new laws and policies to enhance the support systems that are accessible for survivors. The Me Too movement transformed public opinion towards sexual harassment and assault by breaking the silence, exposing abuse of power in industries, and facilitating changes on the local and federal level. The Me Too movement continues to change attitudes and inspires activism against all forms of sexual violence. This movement changed many laws. There have been seven convictions and five charges so far. There are a lot of changes in the workplace. The number of celebrities that were involved contributed largely to the spread of awareness across the world. The change in social attitude and opinion towards sexual violence.
