Self-awareness is important for various aspects of life, such as leadership, teamwork, feedback, and embracing change. When we lack self-awareness, we create barriers and make it difficult for others to communicate with us. An example is a friend who unconsciously shows frustration during meetings discussing change. By being aware of our emotions and how we come across to others, we can improve our perception and relationships. The learning project encourages reflecting on instances of self-awareness and instances where it may have been lacking, to develop self-awareness and improve productivity, teamwork, and communication. Self-awareness, and again, this might be a little bit of the skewed view. We think self-awareness drives everything. Reception of leadership, reception of teammates, reception of feedback, reception of tough times, reception of our ability to embrace and accept and drive and execute change. And if somebody isn't self-aware, we tend to put up our own roadblocks. We tend to have walls around ourself, and we make it tough for people to get in. We make it tough for people to ask us to do things. We don't think we will. Let me give you a really rough example as we get into the learning project. I have a friend who is also a client and has become a friend through our client work. And he's a great guy, and every time he sees something that he knows was going to be added to his pile on his desk, he literally has what he does not believe, or at least initially didn't believe, to have somewhat of a volatile reaction like rolling his eyes, throwing his head back. And he doesn't even know he does it. And I said, are you aware in those meetings the message you're sending off? And he said, what are you talking about? I said, when that person leading the meeting brought up all the change coming, you look exasperated. He goes, well, I didn't mean to. I don't feel that way. I said, really? I said, all the change that's being thrown at you right now, what's the first word that comes to your mind, honestly? And that's called a behavioral indicator question. And he said, concerned. And he said, oh, my God, I showed concern. I said, yeah, you did. And we kind of laughed about it. So one of the greatest things you can do is when you think about the learning project, knowing your own emotions, becoming aware of how you come off to other people, understanding other people's emotional makeup, which has got a little bit of empathy in it. When we become aware of ourselves, we become aware of our perception that we create. So the learning project can be as every week I want you to come in with two examples of where you were highly self-aware and it really served you well. And maybe one situation where you felt like you lost a little bit of your self-awareness and it may have caused discord. That framework over six to eight, maybe even 10 to 12 weeks will really hyper develop someone's self-awareness, which will lead to greater productivity, teamwork, collaboration, communication, and everything else.
