Law 41 of the 48 Laws of Power advises against trying to live up to a great person's legacy. It suggests that the first person who accomplishes something always seems better than those who come after. If you are successful because of a famous parent or as a great person yourself, you will need to achieve even more than them to stand out. To establish your own identity, you should break away from their influence, criticize their accomplishments, and find your own path to success. In the 48 Laws of Power, Law 41 states, avoid stepping into a great man's shoes. What happens first always appears better and more original than what comes after. If you succeed as a great man or have a famous parent, you will have to accomplish double their achievements to outshine them. Do not get lost in their shadow, or stuck in a past not of your own making. Establish your own name and identity by changing course, slay the overbearing father, disparage his legacy, and gain power by shining in your own way.
