The transcription discusses the 2023 season preview for Texas football. It starts by highlighting the most talked about player, Quinn Years, who is expected to make a big impact and potentially compete for the Heisman Trophy. The receiver room also has high expectations, particularly for Xavier Worthy. The quarterback room has depth with Malik Murphy and Arch Manning as potential backups. The defense is strong, especially with standout players like Jalen Ford and Jade Barron. The offensive line is experienced and has good depth. The head coach, Steve Sarkisian, is under pressure to perform well and prove himself to the Texas football program. The season prediction includes wins against Rice, Wyoming, and Kansas, as well as a close game against Baylor. The Texas defense needs to improve its pass rating. Overall, the team has the potential to make the Big 12 championship game and potentially the college football playoff. All righty, Texas football 2023 season preview. I'm going to start it off here with probably the most talked about person in the offseason, most hype around the team, Quinn Years. Quinn Years is a high-recruited recruit out of high school, five-star, skipped the senior season, has had hype since he was a freshman, has always had people talking about him in the offseason, what will he do? But for this year, it's most important for Quinn. He is going to be a registered sophomore. Many offseason reports have him top ten in the Heisman voting, some have him winning. Who knows about all that, but the biggest thing and the biggest question is can Quinn make the jump from his last year play to this year play in order to help Texas win games, in order to put him in that Heisman voting race? Will he be able to do that? So the hype and expectations around him are high as of right now, so what will Quinn do to prove what he was worth and why Texas got him? Going on to Xavier Worthy, he was a day-one starter for Texas, started his very first game as a freshman, and he had a great freshman campaign. He had many more yards than he did last year, but last year he had 60 receptions, 760 yards, and nine touchdowns. He also has a lot of hype around his name. Many believe he'll be a first-round draft pick. So his expectations are up there with Quinn, too. What will he do to succeed this season? What will he do to separate himself from the other receivers on his team and help Texas win games? Going on to position groups, I'm going to start with the quarterback room. Obviously, you have Quinn, all the expectations around him, throws a pretty deep ball. For backup quarterback right now, it's ups between Malik Murphy and Arch Manning. Obviously, Arch Manning, number one player in the class of 2013, a lot of hype around him. Many say it's because of his last name. So it'll be interesting to see if Quinn gets hurt, who's the backup, either Arch or Malik, because Malik is 6'5", built, has an arm of Josh Allen and many other NFL players, can really sling the ball. So that'll be interesting to see later in the season, if it does get to the point where Quinn gets hurt or has bad play. Going on to the receiver room, obviously Xavier Worthy, high expectations, expected to have a great year. Another receiver who tore his ACL in the spring game of his junior year that's expected to make an impact this year is Isaiah Nayer. He is expected to have a great year, and then it goes on to Jordan Whittington, who has started most of his years at Texas, battled injuries, been off and on the field for a while, but he is a great slot receiver for Quinn to throw to and has a great route running. And the biggest pickup at receiver this offseason was A.D. Mitchell from Georgia. Really elusive route running, great catching, ball skills, caught many TDs, one or two TDs in the natty, so he's the real deal. They have John Tate Cook, who's a true freshman, a backup as of now, but we'll see some time. He's a total stud, excellent route running. Going on to the corners, they have Ryan Watts and Terrence Brooks, who are both returning starters, but someone's name who's appeared to pop up in fall camp a lot was Manny Muhammad, a true freshman out of South Oak Cliff High School. Apparently he's been competing for the day one starting job. They haven't announced if he will start, but he's going to get a lot of playing time for sure. He has showed in fall camp what he can do. Going on to safeties, Texas picked up a guy by the name of Jalen Catalan from Arkansas. Really good depth for him for Texas, will be a side for us. Returning starter Jaren Thompson had a great year last year, expected to have one again this year. Linebacker's big, big name, Jalen Ford, absolute stud. Many believe he was snubbed at the Big 12 Defensive MVP award last year after having the best stats, but they ultimately snubbed him for someone with worse stats, so many Texas fans were mad about that, but he should be the frontrunner for the award this year. David Gabenda or Maurice Blackwell are going to be the two names that are stepping into DeMarvian Overson's role. DeMarvian Overson was obviously a great player for Texas, started many years, was a huge loss this offseason, so David and Maurice are looking to fill in that role. Lead Jade Barron, great player, had a great, terrific season last year and will be one to watch for this year too. Running backs, losing Bijon Robinson and Roshon Johnson to the NFL were both huge losses, but Texas recruiting at running back has been great this past couple years. We have five-star CJ Baxter who is looking to get a lot of playing time, Jonathan Brooks who is expected to be the starter, and Keylon Robinson. All three are studs, all three will play a lot, all three will hope to make a huge impact on the team. Going to D-Line, pretty stacked at D-Line, I would say this is a really, really good defensive run-stop D-Line, mainly. They consist of all the starters from last year except for Justice Stinkley, but you got Barron Sorrell, Byron Murphy, Devondre Sweat, all huge players, key players to the D-Line and most importantly the defense. Going on to the O-Line, I believe everybody here started last year, so the O-Line experience is up there. You got at left tackle Kelvin Banks, who was a true freshman last year, only allowed one sack. Alabama linebacker and third overall pick Will Anderson said that Kelvin Banks was one of the hardest O-Linemen he had to get by in his college football career, so that's high praise on the left tackle, gotta be sophomore. Left guard Hayden Conner played a lot of stats for Texas, has experience, good, good pass blocker, at center Jake Majors, same thing as Cole, or Hayden I should say, great run blocker, great pass blocker, huge key for this O-Line this year. Cole Hudson, who was a true freshman last year, gotta be a true sophomore, is a really good blocker. Then you move on to right tackle with Christian Jones, who is a redshirt senior, has had a lot of experience in the Texas football program, is looking to do great things this year too. We have lots of depth at O-Line, many five star recruits and freshmen and sophomores, so anybody gets hurt, it's next man up mentality for Texas. Texas had great run blocking and good pass blocking last year and should have that this year most likely. Going on to Steve Sarkeesian's expectations, many people because of the recent head coaches at Texas believe Sarke has only four years to prove what he can do for the Texas football program, so this year or the next year may be his last based on the pattern of Tom Herman and Charlie Strong getting fired in their first four years, but do we give Sarke time is the question. Sarke has shown he can recruit well at the level he's at and he's shown he can coach good games, has good game planning, but it also took Darryl K. Royal and Matt Brown, two famous Texas football coaches, eight years to win an Addy, so the true question is do the Texas fans give Sarke enough time to prove what he can do or do they want to fire him after this year if we give seven and five. But going on to the season prediction, first game Texas plays Rice at home. I think this should be an easy win. Look to get the guys comfortable for the season, give them some momentum going into Alabama week two at Bama. This will be tough going into their stadium. Anytime you go into Alabama and play a Nick Saban team it is not going to be easy, but I do believe that Texas will pull out due to the fact that Alabama still hasn't decided their starting quarterback this late into the fall camp, so clearly they are struggling there. So if they don't have a quarterback they may not be as good as they were in previous years. Then you move on to Wyoming at home the next week, week three. I think that's a little more of a challenge than Rice, but I still think it's an easy win for Sarke and Co. three and 0. Then you go on to Baylor week four away. Texas always seems to keep it too close to Baylor when they shouldn't. Regardless this Baylor team is good and can beat anyone, so Texas I think will beat them but barely get out of Waco with a win. Going on to Kansas at home, I think this is an easy dub for us, five and 0. Then versus OU at the Cotton Bowl, probably the most anticipated game on Texas and OU's schedule. I think Texas pulls this out and gets their sixth win of the season, no losses. And here's the twist, they go to Houston next week and Texas always seems to drop one must win or one should have won game each year and I think it will be this year. First year playing Houston, being their first year they don't know how to play them or what they should do. All they have is a film to look at, a Houston film to look at, so I think that will be the one game Texas drops that should have been a win or easily could have won. Then you go on to BYU, I think we win that, go right now seven and one on the season. Then play Kansas State, I think we lose that, Kansas State has been great for the last years, won the Big 12 championship last year, I think we dropped that seven and two. Then we go on, play TCU, I think we win that eight and two. Then we play Iowa State, I think we win that nine and two of the season. And then go on to play Texas Tech at home, Texas Tech and Texas have seemed to start a new rivalry these past three or four years in every sport so there will be a lot of hype into this game, but I ultimately think Texas pulls out the win. Ten and two on the season, for sure make a Big 12 championship game, if they win the Big 12 championship game I think they can make the college football playoff with two losses depending on how everybody else's season looks, but if not the college football playoff a New Year's Six Bowl for sure. Going on to talk about Texas' defense, Texas had a top 30 defense last year, but what drug that down was their 91st pass rating defense. They didn't have the greatest pass defense, so in order to be great this year, to fulfill those high expectations, they're going to have to fix that pass defense and I think Pete Klosowski is doing that in the offseason. There's a lot of hype going into this year's depth and roster at Texas, many believe this is Texas' best strong safety since Michael Huff, the best corner since Chris Boyd and Holton Hill, best receiver since Cosby and Shipley, two both big names, best D-line since Hampton and Rogers, best tight end since Jermichael Finley, best O-line since 07, best middle linebacker since Jefferson, and most explosive running back since Jamal Charles. So with all this hype, all this depth, all these five stars, all these studs on Texas' roster, what will they do?
