I spoke to Chestnut Avenue resident Niamh McWay, whose property was burgled in the early hours of Wednesday morning. morning. Well, I live on Chestnut Avenue, and our house got burgled basically in the early hours of yesterday morning, and we had our laptops, our TVs, our phones, like pretty much everything stolen from us that was valuable, and it's just really horrible having to live in kind of constant fear and having to have gates and bars on your windows. Just make sure that you're living in a prison, really, and it's just not homely, doesn't make living at uni any easier or more pleasant. And yeah, I just feel like there could be a lot more done to support us and everyone on the road and by the uni and by the council, because it's like the uni are aware of the crimes that are going on, but they just don't help, they're just not showing much pastoral care for their students. Chestnut Avenue isn't the only dangerous street around Hyde Park. Hyde Park contains various different areas that have students fearing for their safety. Millie Desmond, a student at Leeds Becker University, explains what's happened to her since coming to uni. No, I don't feel safe in Hyde Park all the time, because I've got friends who's had their house broken to when they're not in there, and they've known people or like other people I know, and I've seen it on Facebook and like social media, and like the Leeds group chats and stuff of students get broken to, and like cars being smashed up and windscreens getting took off and everything, I just don't feel safe living here, and the uni doesn't do anything about it when people say stuff to them. The travel group says winter bookings have been 17% higher than 12 months ago, while summer reservations are also up. So I think if we can learn from that, which we definitely have done, then we should hopefully come away with some points this weekend.
